How To Make A No Sew Tutu

So, I made my little niece a tutu and she just loved it. The best thing was that it was inexpensive, easy and best of all (for me) was that included absolutely no sewing.

You will need:

  • 5 yards of tulle (for a small child, more for an adult)
  • Ribbon around 1″ to 1 1/2″ wide, long enough so that goes around the waist of the person you are making it for +40 inches (or an elastic head band)
  • Sharp scissors
  • Optional, additional thinner ribbon and fray check.

First take your ribbon and cut it to go around the waist of the person you are making it for plus 40 inches. Tie a know 20″ in at each end of the ribbon. If desired, you can use fray check on the end of the ribbon. Option, you can also use an elastic head band, but you need to make sure that it will fit around the waist of your child and it is not too tight. I like ribbon because it makes a pretty bow and it easy to take off for bathroom breaks.

Then take your tulle and holding the folded side, fold in half and half again. When you fold, keep the original folded side up and fold in both times. You should have a manageable piece to work with. Fold in again if you need to.

Next, starting at the original folded side (which you should be holding at the top) start rolling the fabric. You’ll want to do this on a table. When the tulle is completed rolled up, snip off the two ends at the thickest point. You will not be needing these two pieces. Then cut the roll approximately every 3 to 4 inches. The width of these pieces is personal preferences. Just make sure to keep them about the same. I just eye balled it, but you can measure it if you want.

Take your ribbon and put it in front of you. Then take a piece of your cut tulle. If making the tutu for a small child, but the tulle along the fold line. If making for a larger child or teen, do not cut. Length is also a personal preference. Then take your piece of tulle and slip know it around the ribbon inside of the knot you made earlier. Continue with remaining pieces, pushing them together on the ribbon. Well, I just googled slip knot to make sure I was calling it the right thing, but apparently I’m not. All you need to do is to take the strip of tulle and fold it in half, holding the halfed part under the ribbon with the top sticking out, pull the ends of the tulle over the ribbon and through the hole that has been created by the folded tulle sticking out the top of the ribbon. Pull the tulle all the way through until it forms a knot.

Keep doing this until you have used all the tulle. If making for an adult you will need more yards of tulle. When it’s all filled up, you’re ready to tie it on and have some fun. The extra 20″ on each side give you ample room to tie a bow.

Option, I kept my pieces of rolled tulle separated and at the end of each roll, I put in a piece of thinner ribbon for an accent. I just measured it to the length of the tulle and knotted it around the main ribbon the same way. You can also add flowers and bling too.
