Fishy Fishy In The Brook

011 fishy fishy in the brook book page 2013

The beginning of a nursery rhyme was stuck in my head “Fishy fishy in the brook” when I started sketching. I had to actually google the rest of it so I could get it out of my head. My husband likes to say this one whenever we eat fish or sushi. Here is the whole poem:

Fishy, Fishy, In a Brook

Fishy, fishy, in a brook
Daddy caught him with a hook
Mommy fried him in a pan
And baby ate him like a man.

  1. I love this. Fishy Fishy In a Brook was a nursery rhyme my mom often sang to my girls. When she laid in the hospital a few years back after several strokes, she was unable to speak. In her last days, as we were all gathered around her in the hospital, one of the kids tried to remember this, she suddenly shook her head no, and sang this rhyme to us! Its a special treasure always. I love that you illustrated over the page. 🙂

  2. I just googled “Fishy, fishy in the brook” and found your special story! About 55 years ago when I was around 10, my grandfather won a fishing rod and reel and gave it to me. Although I think she was joking, my grandmother said I would have to give it to her if I couldn’t catch a fish. She then said this little rhyme- “Fishy, fishy in the brook, let me catch you with my hook. If I don’t catch you today, I’ll have to give my rod away!” I know many nursery rhymes, but had never heard this, nor have I ever heard it since. I always thought my grandmother made it up on the spot. After all, she was a long time high school English teacher. For some reason, I was thinking of this little rhyme today and decided to look it up. Though I can no longer give full credit to “Mom,” I fully enjoyed reading your uplifting story and hope you enjoy mine as well. I will have to continue the research of Fishy, fishy, not because it is an urgent matter, but because it takes me back to a simpler time where this little girl could go out to the farm and feed the cats leftover food from the week and fish in the pond with her grandfather.
